I would like to break down this topic into more simple and
practical steps.
1. Create a need to read:
That sound so difficult! If you want your
child to love reading then first create a need for reading. Create an
environment where your child should think reading is important for her
survival. Even WE do not do things which we feel if there is no need of doing
it! Now the question is
how to create a need? First thing, stop forcing your child to open a book to
read. Reading can be done without books. For example, ask your child what she want
from supermarket this week? when she tells what she wants, tell her I Can’t
remember your list, please write it for me. When she starts writing encourage
her to write correct spellings or rather refer some books for the same. This
could be your first step to make your daughter understand need of reading. Gradually,
you can introduce books like, The Feelings Book (Revised): The Care and Keeping
of Your Emotions, A Smart Girl's Guide to Knowing What
to Say etc.
2. Make reading more comfortable and
enjoyable:
Teach your child more kinesthetic method
rather than boring ways of just siting and reading books monotonously. Introduce
some activity books, for more details about activity books, click here.
3.
Build
confidence in reading by introducing simple to more complicated books:
If your child feels that she can master any
particular book, then she will just start loving the reading. Simple method is
to introduce simple fun activity books and then gradually start with more
complicated books. She will get use to reading with this method.
4. Golden rule – Appreciate your child:
Many, rather all psychologist say,
appreciation and encouragement is key to learning. We all want to get
appreciated for what we do. A word of appreciation can change the entire
scenario. If parents want their children to learn something then parents should
first learn how to appreciate the child.
P.S: Take things easy. Patience is the key.
